Genesis 4 & 5 Adam’s Children
Genesis 4 Notes:
What do you know about Cain &b Abel?
*Their parents are ___________&______
*Cain is a __________ & Abel is a _____________
*Cain is the __________ brother
*God did or did not accept Cain’s gift? ________
*Eve hoped her first son would be their Savior, instead he was the first __________.
What was Cain’s gift? some of his _________
Why didn’t God accept this?
God has not yet given the Law to his people, the Law will come during the time of Moses describing sacrifice for sins in detail. But God did have to kill an animal in order to cover up Adam & Eve’s shame with animal skins. Therefore, blood sacrifices would be the required sacrifice for repentance of sins. This is not unknown information to Cain. For some reason, he did not sacrifice the appropriate animal or trade his brother some crops for one. Be it laziness or indifference, Cain’s offering is not what God specifically required, and God warns Cain with a second chance.
Reread verses 6-7. What did God say?
“Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? You will be _____________ if you do what is _______. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! ______ is crouching at the door, eager to ___________ you. But _______ must subdue it and be its master.”
Verse 8 reveals Cain’s plan to catch Abel by surprise. This shows Cain committed premeditated murder, and therefore he clearly ignored what God previously told him.
How does Psalm 37:32 describe Cain’s actions?
The ____________wait in ____________ for the godly,
looking for an excuse to _________them.
Why does God ask Cain where Abel is?
God knew the answer to this question. He asked Cain because He wanted to give him the opportunity to ____________his _____ and start to do right after having done wrong. How futile it was for Cain to _____ to God! It was madness for him to think God didn’t know where Abel was, or that he could actually hide his sin from God.
How does Psalm 139:1-4 confirm the absurd practice of trying to hide sin from God?
Reread verse 13. What does Cain say about his punishment?
“My punishment is _____________ than I can ________!
Cain didn’t feel bad about his ______, but only about his_________________. This attitude did not end with Can; like him, many people feel only bad about their punishment, not their sin. But feeling bad about our sin is what leads us to repentance and God’s _______________.
It is important to know that God would have forgiven Cain if he had repented for his sin, and the punishment even though not the consequences for his sin would have been eliminated.
