Week #9 Elijah
1 Kings 17 & 18 Read the story here.
Use the Verse of the Week for Bible, Handwriting, Spelling, and Grammar.
Verse of the week: 1 Kings 18:24 Then call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by setting fire to the wood is the true God!” And all the people agreed.
Bible: Talk about the verse:
Why is there a lower case g for the god Baal and a capital G for God?
Which one set fire to the altar and why?
How did God answer Elijah and why?
Why aren’t other gods and other things people believe in effective?
Handwriting:
This passage contains 3 sentences for three days of handwriting this week.
Spelling: name, fire, wood, people, answer, agree
Activity ideas: write the words 2 times each, draw a picture of each word & label it, simply spell the words aloud, write each word in a different color each time you write them
Grammar:
Proper nouns get capitalized. God can be a thing is just a thing like a box or a coat. But when referring to the one, true, living God, it is capitalized. Find another proper noun from the verse (Lord). Think of other proper nouns (how about your name!)
The first sentence in this passage has the Understood You. What is the predicate? (call)
The first sentence is also a compound sentence meaning two sentences are combined together. Which conjunction is used to combine the sentences (and)?
Writing:
Write the funny part of the story (see chapter 18 verse 27).
Write a funny story of your own.
Write about a time when you depended upon God.
Science:
To integrate Science this week, think about the fire and the rain from the story. These are forms of matter. Read and research about Matter this week: solids, liquids & gases. (Big Fat Science Book pgs. 60-69) Make sure to write interesting facts from your research and reading in the Science section of your notebook.
History:
For History, think about the Widow at Zarephath who had no food in the house. There was a time in America when food was scares too. Read and research about the Great Depression this week. Ideas for books to read: The Dustbowl interactive story by Allison Lassieur and What Was the Great Depression by Janet Pascal or The Great Depression by R. Conrad Stein. Remember to write down your favorite parts from your reading and research in the History section of your notebook.
