Week #8 Solomon
1 Kings 3 Read the story here.
Use the Verse of the Week for Bible, Handwriting, Spelling, and Grammar.
Verse of the week: 1 Kings 3:9 “Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong.”
Bible: Talk about the verse:
What is an understanding heart?
How can we know the difference between right and wrong?
What does govern mean? Why does he want to do it well?
Why did God give Solomon wisdom?
Handwriting:
Write the focus verse and other verses from chapter 3 this week.
Spelling: right, wrong, understanding, people, difference, know
Pick a different spelling activity per day to practice these words.
(Ideas)Write the words two time each, write the words backwards, write the words in all CAPs, write the words with markers using a different color for each letter.
Grammar:
Identify the quotation marks and what they indicate.
Understanding is a compound word made up of what two words?
Is the word difference a compound word, or does it just have two sounds (syllables)?
The subject of this sentence is the word You, and it happens to be invisible. It is an imperative sentence meaning the word you is just understood but not written, so it is called the Understood You.
Writing:
Describe a wise person that you know.
Retell the story of Solomon and the two mothers.
Describe a time when you made a wise decision.
Science:
To integrate Science this week, think about life and the baby in the story of Solomon and the two mothers. Read and research about babies and how they develop in their mom's tummy and how much they change in the first year. Be sure to write interesting facts from your research in the Science section of your notebook.
History:
For History, think about King Solomon's prosperity. Read and research about a time of prosperity in our nation and the things that were invented and happened from the turn of the 20th Century through the Roaring Twenties. Check out The Remarkable Rough-Riding Life of Theodore Roosevelt and the Rise of the American Empire by Cheryl Harness from your library to read this week. This book has a fabulous running timeline at the bottom of every page. Don't forget to write your favorite parts from your reading in the History section of your notebook.
Art & Music:
Art: Wisdom of Solomon by James Tissot
Hymn: Be Thou My Vision by Irish Christian Poet St. Dallan in the 8th century
Math curriculum idea: Teaching Textbooks
