Week #7 David
1 Samuel Chapter 17 (Read the story here.)
Use the Verse of the Week for Bible, Handwriting, Spelling, and Grammar.
Verse of the Week: 1 Samuel 17:47 “This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”
Bible: Talk about the verse: (one per day)
Why did Goliath mock David? How did David respond?
What is a battle? How did God help David?
What is it like to have God on our side?
Handwriting:
Write the focus verse the first day.
Choose other verses from chapter 17 to write for the rest of the week.
Spelling:
Use words from the focus verse like: battle, give, victory, Lord
Use one spelling practice activity idea from the previous weeks per day.
Grammar: (one or two items per day)
Identify the subject & predicate (It’s a compound sentence so there are two sets: This & is and he & will.)
A compound sentence has two subjects & two predicates and separated by a comma and a conjunction.
The conjunctions are: and, or, for, nor, yet, but, so. Identify the conjunction in this sentence.
Quotation marks indicate someone is speaking. Who is speaking in the focus verse?
Exclamation marks imply strong feelings. Identify the exclamation mark & read the sentence with feeling!
Writing:
Describe the battle of David and Goliath.
Invent a story about a bully.
Describe a story about a brave person.
Science:
To integrate Science this week, think about Goliath and his size! Read and research about the human body, our DNA and our genes (chapter 42 Big Fat Science Book.) It's fascinating stuff! Remember to write interesting facts from your reading and research in the Science section of your notebook.
History:
For History, think about David's bravery on the battle field. Read and research about brave men and women in battle from the wars fought in our country prior to 1914. (Some ideas include Uylsses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Custer, Davy Crockett, Geronimo & Clara Barton.) Check out Christians Courageous by Anne E. Schraff. Write your favorite parts from your reading and research in the History section of your notebook.
Art & Music:
Hymn: A Mighty Fortress is our God by Martin Luther
Sculpture: Michelangelo’s David
Painting: David & Goliath by Daniele da Volterra
