Week #5 Joshua
Joshua Chapter 6 (Read the story here)
Use the Verse of the Week for Bible, Handwriting, Spelling, and Grammar.
Verse of the Week: Joshua 1:7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do.
Bible: Talk about the verse:
What does courageous mean? Have you ever been brave?
What does obey mean? Do you obey? What is that like?
What does deviate mean? Have you ever deviated from a plan before? What happens when we deviate from God’s plans?
What does successful mean? How can we be successful?
Handwriting: Write one portion of the Verse of the Week each day.
Spelling List & Activities: strong, obey, gave, right, left, everything
Write words using a different color for the first sound and the same colors for the word families, spell words aloud backwards and forwards, and type words on the computer.
Grammar:
The subject of Be strong and very courageous is an invisible “you” (the understood you).
The subject of Be careful to obey all the instructions... is also the understood "you." It’s called an imperative sentence meaning a sentence that gives a command.
A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. Identify both.
A proper noun is a specific name that’s why Moses is capitalized.
Turning either to the right or to the left is a gerund phrase and can be switched around with the preceding phrase separated by a comma.
Everything is a compound word. Compound words are two words put together to make one word. Can you think of any compound words?
The word "obey" is a verb. Verbs are action words. Can you think up some action words of your own?
Writing:
Why was Joshua a good leader?
Describe the battle of Jericho.
Describe a time when you had to be courageous.
Science:
To integrate Science this week, think about the giant wall in Jericho crumbling down and all the rock and debris that would remain. Research on the internet about rocks, or check out books in your library about rocks and minerals. Make sure you write down an interesting fact or two from your reading in the Science section of your notebook. (Big Fat Book of Science pgs.228-234)
History:
For History, resume researching and reading about Early America. Like in America, the Israelites were entering a new land, so read about the Westward Expansion. Check out chapter 38 in The Story of the World Volume 3 by Susan Wise Bauer & All American History Student Reader by Celeste W. Rakes. Make sure you write down your favorite part or an interesting fact from your reading in the History section of your notebook.
Art, Poetry & Music. (Romans 1:20 For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities...)
Art: Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh
Poetry: Stars by Robert Frost
Music: Be Thou My Vision (8th Century)
