Sample Lesson - Knowing God

This sample lesson is an example of daily reading through a book of the Bible one chapter (or portions of a chapter) at a time with your family.

Monday

Read: Deuteronomy 4:1-14

Write:  Deut. 4:2
Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you.

Truths from this verse:
  1. God’s Word is complete.
  2. God wants us to obey without making excuses.
  3. God wants us to represent him accurately to others. We shouldn’t make new Believers think there are a bunch of extra requirements to being saved.

Corresponding verse:
1 Samuel 15:22

Pray:
Make a prayer from your list of truths using "thank you" or "help me" statements.

Language Lesson:
  • Subject = understood you, Predicate = do
  • singular and plural - “commands” is plural “command” is singular. Make a quick list of other singular words and make them plural. Some have a special ending.
  • Proper nouns are capitalized. Identify the proper nouns in this verse.
  • Writing Prompt:  Describe a time when you chose to obey God’s will over doing what you really felt like doing instead.
  • Read your writing to your family.
  • Spelling words for this week - commands, careful, obey, covenant, foreign, ancestors, observe, listen
  • Spelling for today is to write the words in alphabetical order.


Tuesday

Read: Deuteronomy 4:15-31

Write: Deut. 4:29
And if you search for him with all your heart and soul, you will find him.

Truths:
  1. Take time to get to know God and his commands by reading the Bible.
  2. Getting to know God well is not automatic.
  3. God promises to be found, that is, make himself known to us.
  4. God is NOT hiding!

Corresponding verses:
Psalm 119:162
Matthew 6:21

Pray: Use the truths to guide your prayer.

Language Lesson:
  • This sentence is a dependent clause joined together with an independent clause separated by a comma. Can you tell which is the independent clause? (the second half is) Remember an independent clause could stand as a sentence all by itself. The word “if” is a dependent maker word.
  • The subject is ‘you’ and the predicate is ‘will find’
  • Make your own sentence with a dependent clause in it using one of the following dependent maker words: because, unless, while
  • Writing prompt: Write about a subject or an object you heavily researched and studied. What was the result of your effort?
  • Read your writing to your family.
  • Spelling today is to write your own synonym for each spelling word


Wednesday

Read: Deuteronomy 4:32-40

Write: Deut. 4:39
So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other.

Truths:
  1. God is the ultimate authority.
  2. There is not person or thing greater than God.
  3. Don’t live like there is - like money or a certain person is as important to you as God is.

Corresponding verses:
Revelation 1:8
Matthew 22:37-38

Pray.

Language Lesson:
  • The sentence following a colon always begins with a capital letter.
  • The subject of this sentence is the understood ‘you’ and the predicate is compound - ‘remember’ & ‘keep’
  • ‘firmly’ is an adverb modifying ‘keep.’ Think of a sentence with an adverb in it.
  • Writing Prompt: Describe something you think that is one of a kind with no duplicate or equal. Make sure you read your writing aloud to your family.
  • Spelling for today is to write an antonym for each spelling word.

Thursday

Read: Deuteronomy 5:1-33

Write: Deut. 5:29
Oh, that they would always have hearts like this, that they might fear me and obey all my commands! If they did, they and their descendants would prosper forever.

Truths:
  1. Make it a priority to remember and obey God’s Word every day.
  2. Don’t stray from following the Lord.
  3. By following God daily, we also benefit others!

Corresponding verses:
Proverbs 4:27
Matthew 5:48

Pray: Use the list of truths as a guide.

Language Lesson:
  • Interjections are usually placed at the beginning of a sentence and separated by a comma or exclamation point. Identify the interjection in the verse (Oh,).
  • The second sentence of this passage is another dependent clause. Can you identify the dependent clause maker word? (‘If’)
  • So what would the subject and predicate of that sentence be? Remember, they will be found in the independent clause of the sentence. (Compound subject ‘they’ & ‘descendants’ - predicate is ‘would.’
  • Writing prompt: Write about a time you did something for yourself that ended up benefiting others as well. Remember to read your writing aloud to your family when you’re done.
  • Spelling for today is to write each word backwards.

Friday

Read: Deuteronomy chapter 6

Write: Deut. 6:5
And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.

Truths from the verse:
  1. God doesn’t want us only partially committed to him.
  2. My heart is what I treasure. My soul is the real me that my skin covers up. My strength is all the stuff I can physically do.
  3. God doesn’t want me to just love him by good intentions.

Corresponding verses:
Matthew 22:37
Mark 12:30
Luke 10:27

Pray. Use the truths from the verse as a guide.

Language Lesson:
  •  Words in a list are separated by commas.
  • Identify the proper nouns.
  • Subject is ‘you’ predicate is ‘must love’
  • Writing prompt: Jesus added to love God with all your mind to the list. How do we love God with our minds? Read your writing aloud to your family when you’re done.
  • Spelling test!
