1 John 1:7
But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
Facts from the verse:
Jesus, only Jesus, cleanses me from sin and makes me right with God. Romans 3:22 -
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.
God’s way, His light, is true right and true good not formed by a person’s thoughts or opinions but the real, unchanging, righteous standard. Isaiah 55:8-9 - “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts." 'Light,' interestingly enough, is also defined in the dictionary as “the source, pathway, or route of illumination to a person.” And that certainly describes what’s being expressed here in 1 John 1:7.
Living in the “light” puts me where God is - accessible to Him. Jesus prayed this for me over 2,000 years ago: “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you.” John 17:20-21
God wants fellowship with ME! fel·low·ship: the state of sharing mutual interests and experiences, companionship, a friendly relationship... (online dictionary)
I like being reminded that because of Jesus, God is available to me, wants to be with me, cares about me, teaches me, shares experiences with me, and knows more than I do. He is not mad at me. He is not waiting for me to mess up so He can rub my nose in it. That doesn’t sound like fellowship. Fellowship with God is something that happens only where He is... in the Light.
So, in the words of Charlie Peacock made popular by DC Talk and most recently Anthem Lights,
I wanna be in the Light
As You are in the Light
I wanna shine like the stars in the heavens
Oh, Lord be my Light and be my salvation
Cause all I want is to be in the Light
All I want is to be in the Light
Dear God,
Thank you for being LIGHT, real truth, for your Son, my Pathway to your Light. Thank you for your desired and real fellowship with me, for showing me your interests that we might have them in common, and for your Companionship. Thank you also for this song too, inspired by this verse indeed. All I want is to be is in the Light. I love you and thank you and pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
