I Did Not Guard Algebra

9-4-13 “I Did Not Guard Algebra”
2 Timothy 1:13-14
Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.

Pattern of wholesome teaching... 1 Corinthians 11:1 says, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” And vise versa. If there is a teacher or spiritual leader out there NOT imitating Christ, don’t follow that.

Carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you... I know that I didn’t carefully guard Algebra and Geometry in high school. Consequently, I had to retake Algebra in college. I didn’t guard it during that time either, so today helping my teenagers with Algebra takes a lot of review and youtube surfing on my part.  It’d be much easier if I had taken to the practice of doing a little math every day in the meantime just to keep it fresh and accessible.

Ephesians 4:22-24 says, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;  to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”

Putting off old clothes and putting on clean ones is something I do every day. I am in constant practice of carefully guarding the practice of good hygiene. Likewise, every day must be an exercise in reminding myself to live out holiness. And that is no more automatic than wearing one outfit for life and expecting it to stay clean.

Holiness is simply the practice of living like Jesus. And not practicing that or guarding it carefully in my mind every single day will result in a severe deficit of accessibility and familiarity with it.

Dear God,
I want your truth and your ways to be easily accessible to my words and actions today. Help me not to live to forget about holiness like I did with math. Holiness is so much more important and extremely beneficial to continually practice. Help me not let my preferences, frustrations, or other people get in the way of trying to live like Jesus. I love you and thank you and pray in your Son’s name, amen.
