Like the Flu
2 Corinthians 5:17
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

Happy New Year Everybody! How appropriate for biblegateway.com have this be their verse of the day for the beginning of a new year. Out with the old and in with the new. These are very hopeful and helpful words. Lots of people use the new year as a new start. And Believers remember with humility and thankfulness what God did for us the moment we believe in his Son, Jesus. Our Old Life, with no other choices to make but sin or sin has been replaced with a New Life of options to live like Jesus.

So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.  The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.  But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the Law. (Galatians 5:16-18)

I rang in 2017 with the flu. It has affected my whole person – body & mood. I can’t get away from it; I can’t even sleep it off. Is it hard for you to remember what feeling well even felt like after you’ve had the flu for a week, or is that just me? Even though the flu is a bad thing, and not something I want to sustain, it has served as a great reminder of how I want my life to be infected and influenced by the New Person God has  intended for me to be. I want it to take over my being like bronchitis does.

Not a great analogy, but there’s no two forces fighting it out in me right now. Undertheweather has won. So, everyday, even when this bug is finally gone, I want only the infectious life of Jesus influencing my body & mood and the “old life” forgotten and gone.

Dear God,
Thank you for your love and influence that comes over me like the flu. And thank you for your healing and sustaining me from the actual flu. Thank you for this New Year to remind me that I am a New Person. Guide and direct my actions and thoughts this year with your Holy Spirit so I can be like your precious Son, Jesus, in whose name I pray according to your good will. Amen.
