Amos 5:15
Hate evil and love what is good;
turn your courts into true halls of justice.
I would love for our American courts to be true halls of justice! Wouldn’t everyone? And wouldn’t absolutely everybody benefit from that? But our country doesn’t agree on what is evil anymore let along hate it. They don’t agree on what is good either let alone pursue it. That is why our current justice system is anything but just.
Ecclesiastes 8:11-12 says, When a crime is not punished quickly, people feel it is safe to do wrong. But even though a person sins a hundred times and still lives a long time, I know that those who fear God will be better off.
I can see from this passage exactly what the problem is. Crimes aren’t punished quickly anymore, and some crimes aren’t punished anymore at all. And people are just seeing how much they can get away with since no hammer is coming down. Turns out they can get away with quite a bit!
In our day and age where a person can do time for shooting a dog that is mauling a child, I think one of the worst situations a person could be in right now is be in the hands of our courts. Someone who truly needs justice ironically cannot rely on the justice system. I hope my life never interacts with it personally, but I am so thankful for God’s system of Justice that promises me these things:
Psalm 103:6
The Lord gives righteousness
and justice to all who are treated unfairly.
Luke 21:14-15
(Jesus is foretelling his disciples about persecution)
So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you, for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you!
I’m very glad that my life is in God’s hands, and that his hands are bigger than the long arm of the law.
Dear God,
I pray for my friend’s family that is entangled with the courts right now. They are not receiving righteousness and it is so frustrating to know that a good person can’t clear their name from false charges. I pray that you would continue to sustain these dear friends and help them to trust you to work all things for good as you can do that even with bad court decisions. Thank you that you watch over us and promise to right those who’ve been wronged as they trust in you whether you do it in this life or the next. You are great and just and holy and perfect and I wish our justice system reflected your brand of justice. But I thank you so much that your Word describes your just ways perfectly and that we have such a great deal to look forward to one day! I love you and praise you and pray in your Son’s name. Amen.
