My Real Purpose
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
What is my purpose? What an age old contemplation this is. But the answer is actually simple. My purpose is God’s purpose for me. So, then, what is God’s purpose for me?
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. (Romans 8:28-29)
He chose them to become like his Son... My purpose is to be like Jesus.
When I was part of the workforce, I was an elementary school teacher. But being a teacher isn’t my purpose. My purpose is to be like Jesus. There is a difference between being a teacher who is a Believer and being a Believer who is a teacher. Which one is the most important? Am I a teacher who happens to be a Believer in my spare time, or am I a Believer who happens to teach during the day? Did I put my hands on those tiny chairs in the morning before my students arrived and pray for them? Did I invite my colleagues to church? Did I participate in lunch room gossip? Whatever I have to do today or wherever I have to go, I want to do those things and go to those places with my purpose in mind.
Whatever it is we do for a living isn’t our purpose. Our purpose is to be like Jesus in everything we do all the time – seen or unseen. This is how others find out who he is and hopefully serve him too.
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:16)
But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” (Romans 10:14-15)
Dear God,
Help me to live my true purpose today when I’m at the grocery store, returning emails, parenting, cleaning, and even while making peanut butter sandwiches. I truly desire to be like your Son, Jesus in everything I do, and I am so thankful that you have given me an exact purpose with the help of your Holy Spirit to live in your good and perfect will for me. I love you so much and thank you for Jesus, and I pray in his name, amen.
