Representing
Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.
One of my favorite quotes from Abigail Adams is from one of her letters to her son, John. “My Dear Son... remember that you are accountable to your Maker for all your words and actions.” What great advice for a parent to impart. You can’t be with your kids all the time, and as they get older a mom could really freak out at what they might do. But those who love Jesus choose to be his representative, and that decision will affect all other decisions.
Giving thanks through him (Jesus) to God the Father... Remember, Jesus is the Way to God (See John 14:6). Jesus is God’s representative - a perfect representative. He always pleases God (see John 8:29). He always does God’s will (see Luke 22:42). I want to be a representative like that. Hard core.
And through Jesus is how I give my thanks to God, and my thanks to God is given as a direct result from living to be a representative of Jesus. There’s no better way to demonstrate my thankfulness to God than through obedience to his Son and living as his representative. And Psalm 119:7-8 perfectly describes this girl’s attitude towards being a representative of Christ...
As I learn your righteous regulations,
I will thank you by living as I should!
I will obey your decrees.
Please don’t give up on me!
Dear God,
Thank you that simply remembering Jesus represents you, and my desire to represent him affects how I live and what I do. Thank you for my kids’ own personal desire to follow you that affects what they do. It is very freeing as a parent to know they each love and trust you and don’t want to misrepresent you to whomever they’re with. Thank you that I can show you how thankful I am by obeying you, and thank you that you don’t give up on me when I fail. You are so good to me and I love you so much. Please let others see you in me through the One whom I represent. Thank you for your amazing ways, and I thank you and pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
