Victory from the Start
1 John 1:7
But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
When Rob was teaching on Wednesday night, he reminded us that we are not working FOR victory over sin; we are working FROM victory over sin.
1 John 1 goes on to say...
If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. (v.8-9)
Life for the Believer isn’t about attaining righteousness; Jesus already gave that to us the moment we believed in him. This is how we “live in the light.” We are not fooling ourselves; we know what’s really going on. We are not trying harder to be good, and we are not impressed with ourselves about how many rules we keep or how kind we are. We totally understand that Jesus is the one who has made our hearts good again.
I love that thought! We are working FROM victory. Victory (righteousness, wholeness, a good heart) is our starting point when we have Jesus. Victory is not our 5 year plan or 12 step program. Victory is the beginning of my story not the end. This morning, when my feet hit the floor, I am already right with God and know that his plan for me today is to know him even more and to know him even better.
Dear God,
Thank you for your Son, Jesus, who has made my heart good, taken away my sin and shame, and showered me with grace and mercy. Thank you for such a wonderful gift and such a wonderful way to live. Help me to continue to live in HIS victory over everything that could trip me up instead of trying harder or carrying out my ideas. I want YOUR way only where there is light and life and victory from the start. I love you and thank you and pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
